The Pollinators Meadow 2024

Designed to support our bees and other pollinators during the summer heat

In early Spring 2024, we prepared the ground at Maitreya Pure Land and sowed 400 square meters of annual wildflower seeds to support our three honey bee colonies during the summer heat. By early June, the flowers reached full bloom and also successfully attracted a surprising large variety of butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Wildflowers are essential for honey bees, providing them with vital food sources in the form of nectar and pollen. Many of the selected wildflower species feature single blooms that also offer bees easier landing spots for shelter and rest.

Honey bees can travel up to 20 kilometers daily in search of nectar, and they prefer a diverse array of flowers in various shapes, sizes, and heights. With a foraging radius of about 2 kilometers, wildflower meadows are ideal habitats for them. By creating these wildflower spaces, we enable bees to access a wealth of nutrients within a short distance, as well as provide ground cover to a wide range of other local wildlife.

The flower varieties in our pollinator meadow

2025 and beyond

The initial purpose of the 2024 Flower Meadow was to assess its productivity with minimal maintenance over a large area, while also determining its suitability for our specific soil type and climate.

For 2025, we plan to expand the flower meadow area to double its present size, and adjust the seed mix to enhance resilience against the summer heat typical of this region in France. Additionally, with the support of any future sponsors we will seek professional advice to hopefully incorporate low-maintenance perennials such as lavender, ornamental sage and thyme.

These perennials will not only provide extended periods of support for local pollinators, but also serve as a resource for other uses, such as filling statues and other sacred objects in our art workshop.

It is our collective and individual responsibility to to preserve and tend to the environment in which we all live.
